Internship Description
SHIP
Shelter the Homeless International Projects was founded in 2004 by Robert and Ann Horton. SHIP originally started being partnered with an orphanage in order to construct a new building. SHIP still partners with that same orphanage and has built their own facility on the same 12 acre area of land. Over the years, SHIP has expanded to sponsor kids at the orphanage, as well as in the surrounding neighborhood, in attending private schools, as the public schools are very dangerous due to gangs. Shortly after finishing the new building for the orphanage, SHIP began building homes in the neighborhood for those in need. SHIP also provides the opportunity for the local people to earn an income through the SHIP resale shop. Locals buy articles of clothing at a discounted rate and sell them at whatever price they desire. Each year and each trip brings new opportunities to become further involved in El Salvador.
SHIP Internship Package
Shelter the Homeless International Projects was founded in 2004 and has been taking interns since 2014. The monetary cost of this internship package is $2,200, plus airfare. Airfare can fluctuate anywhere between $300 - $1000. This is an unpaid internship, but the internship package covers room and board, food, transportation besides airfare, and travel insurance. My internship was just over 8 weeks, though this time may change from year to year. There will be multiple groups come from the Unites States for 1-2 weeks at a time. Some of the perks of being an intern are: constantly meeting and working with new people, being immersed in the El Salvador culture, going on excursions at least once a week to beach, volcano, zoo, etc. People coming with the groups may be young or old and the opportunity for networking is readily available. There is currently not employment opportunities with SHIP, but the networking from the people of SHIP and the people who come with the groups can lead to alternate employment opportunities.
